There are many reasons you may want to know how to calculate your income tax without doing a full tax return. One reason to do a quick calculation of your tax is to determine when you should do your actual tax return. If you are going to get a big tax return, you probably want to do your taxes as soon as possible. If you are going to owe the IRS money, you probably want to wait until the last minute or even request an extension. If you are trying to figure out how to calculate income tax easily read on. When you are ready to do your taxes, check the link at the bottom for a tax software review site including sites that will do your taxes for free.

The first thing you need to know to calculate income tax is how much money you made and how much you have paid in taxes. This information can be found on your pay stub or your W2.. Your pay stub should show you how much money you have made. You need to look at the “net” number because you don’t have to pay taxes on certain things like 401K contributions. The other number you need is how much tax you have paid. Write these 2 numbers down as we will need them later. Next, you need to figure out all your deductions. This includes charitable contributions, (like to your church), mortgage interest, your deductions per person in your household, and anything else that is tax deductible. Just add all these numbers up. Don’t worry about being exact because you are just getting an estimate right now. Now that you have your income and deductions. All you do is subtract your deductions from your income and look up how much tax you owe for that amount. Based on your filing status and net income, you will see how much you owe. Compare that to the amount of tax that was taken out of your paycheck and you have your return amount or how much you owe.

Tax returns are forms filed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or the state tax collection agency. These forms contain information on the calculation of income tax or other taxes. The standard US individual tax return is form 1040. There are several variations of this form such as the 1040EZ and 1040A with different supplement forms. Americans who earn more than a specified amount of money are required to file tax returns by law. IRS demands tax returns on the basis of three parameters, which includes filing status, age and income level.

Filing status is based on a person’s marital status on the last day of year. This includes single or joint return status. Filing requirements vary according to a taxpayer’s filing status. According to the IRS, all those earning a regular income should file a return. However, there are certain rules for the elderly and for children under the age of 14 with an investment income. There are certain income limits for filing the tax return. If a person’s gross income is not exceeding that limit then they need not file any tax returns. Employment income, income from self-employment and investment income is all taxable income.

Many Americans file their returns online rather than paying taxes themselves. Many companies offer free or paid services for preparing tax returns. There are many websites that render the services of filing tax returns. These websites display tax tables and tax rate schedules for the current year and also provide downloadable forms and publications. They also provide status reports on tax returns and store records of previous year’s tax return to taxpayers.

IRS also has an electronic tax filing process, which has made the tax filing process completely paperless. IRS has implemented two pilot programs to replace handwritten signatures on paper with electronic-enabled numbers. Electronically tax filing enables taxpayers to make direct deposit of taxes to the IRS or using credit card. It also assures that the IRS has received their forms on time and sends them the verification for that.

Using a tax preparation firm can help save you money and time since the firm is experienced in this particular endeavor because of how many returns they file each year. Another key is to think through how complicated your tax return will be. You want to work with a tax preparation firm which has worked with people in your type of situation. A good example might be if you worked in two different countries within one year. This can be a highly complicated situation that many tax preparers have never faced before. Having familiarity with situations is critical so that your tax preparer has experience with the tax codes that pertain to your particular situation.

If you own a small business and work with an accounting company, a good practice is to have your taxes done by your accountant or to work with someone at the recommendation of your accountant. If you are happy with your accountant, you can easily find referrals by talking to him or her. People get along with others whom they like and if your accountant gets along well with a certain tax preparation firm, you will likely work well with them as well. This can ensure a good working relationship.

Find a tax preparation firm early in the game. If you wait until close to the filing deadline, you may find that many firms may have to turn you away. They already have many clients and are not able to keep up with new clients as well. If you give yourself time by starting the process earlier in the year, you can find a firm that you want to work with very easily and which has time for you as well.

Check how the tax preparation firm has worked with others. You can ask for a past customer referral to talk with if you would like. You could also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints against the tax preparation firm in the past. There is also a state board for accountancy that you can check with to see that you are working with a reputable tax preparer.
